Creating something beautiful is the vision of the fashion entrepreneur and designer Brunello Cucinelli. This approach is meant to be understood in a holistic sense, as Mr Cucinelli is by no means satisfied with the undeniably exquisite products of his menswear collections, but instead consistently works towards an ethical and morally responsible working process and environment within his company. Alongside reinvestment in the business and its employees, profits are also allocated to charitable causes, as well as to the preservation of the medieval and picturesque village of Solomeo, the company’s headquarters, and to culture and the surrounding landscape. In this way, the result is far more than simply Brunello Cucinelli menswear.
A picturesque village near Perugia in the Italian region of Umbria, surrounded entirely by nature and serving as the creative hub of the world-renowned cashmere producer: almost every resident of the small town is employed in some capacity by Brunello Cucinelli, forming part of a self-contained community shaped by the owner’s commitment to both the town and its people. The history of the designer label dates back to 1978, when Brunello Cucinelli laid the foundations of the company in Solomeo using just three simple knitting machines. Since then, Brunello Cucinelli menswear has stood for an uncompromising commitment to quality in clothing and accessories – above all in luxurious cashmere knitwear. With the rise of the quiet luxury trend in menswear, Brunello Cucinelli experienced another surge, as few other brands embody the ideal of understated luxury in fashion as consistently as this Italian family-run house.
The brand, or company, Brunello Cucinelli is majority-owned by its eponymous founder, Brunello Cucinelli. The Italian entrepreneur founded the luxury label in 1978 and remains its Executive Chairman as well as Creative Director. The listed company is called “Brunello Cucinelli S.p.A.” Despite its stock market listing in 2012, Brunello Cucinelli continues to retain control of the business. Also closely involved in the company are his daughters: Camilla Cucinelli is Executive Director and Vice President of the company. She has worked for the brand since 2002 and is primarily responsible for creative processes, collections, and the development of new product lines. Her younger sister Carolina Cucinelli takes on both creative and strategic responsibilities within brand development.
Brunello Cucinelli produces its collections almost entirely in Italy, consistently relying on traditional craftsmanship and regional production structures. At the heart of its manufacturing is the company headquarters in Solomeo, Umbria, where a large share of development and production takes place. This is complemented by a network of specialised Italian workshops and tailoring houses, including in Tuscany, Abruzzo, and Veneto. According to official company statements, Brunello Cucinelli works with several hundred Italian artisan workshops and places particular emphasis on a high degree of manual craftsmanship. The company explicitly describes “Made in Italy” as a central part of its identity and continuously invests in expanding its own production facilities within Italy.
The distinctive quality of Brunello Cucinelli menswear lies in a clearly defined interplay of material excellence, colour concepts, and artisanal craftsmanship, consistently favouring restraint over overt statement. At its core is the use of exceptionally high-quality natural materials such as cashmere, cotton, linen, leather, calfskin, and suede. In particular, the brand’s premium leather qualities are crafted by its tailors into blousons and jackets with a refined aesthetic. These materials are not treated as mere raw inputs, but as a design element that defines the structure, drape, and tactile feel of the garments. Cashmere plays a central role for Brunello Cucinelli and is therefore closely tied to the brand identity – the sweaters and cardigans made from this rare fibre are regarded as the essence of the label. A characteristic detail is the fine contrasting trim at the hem and cuffs.
The colour palette also follows a reduced, precisely calibrated system. Typical for Brunello Cucinelli menswear are calm tones such as navy, beige, and brown, deliberately oriented towards a timeless aesthetic and designed for versatile combinations. Patterns are usually limited to pocket squares and swim shorts. Otherwise, the brand relies more heavily on textured materials to create variation and depth. Mélange fabrics, as well as woven stripe and herringbone patterns, provide subtle variation within men’s wardrobes.
In addition, the designer Brunello Cucinelli adopts a very restrained approach to visible branding, with many items featuring no obvious logo. Those who choose menswear from Brunello Cucinelli are aware of the luxury and are not seeking attention. At most, subtle details such as small embroidered brand lettering on baseball caps, logo-engraved buttons on a blazer, a discreet print on the chest of a crew-neck T-shirt, or a patch on swim shorts indicate the luxury house behind the designs.
An interesting detail: the logo of Brunello Cucinelli features a stylised coat of arms with a medieval-inspired character. At its centre are elements such as a castle or tower, as well as a heraldic mythical creature or lion. Beneath this, the inscription “Solomei AD MCCCXCI” often appears – a reference to the Umbrian village of Solomeo and the year 1391.
This interplay of considered restraint, premium materials, and a controlled, harmonious colour palette defines every collection and is reflected across all segments, from Brunello Cucinelli men’s jumpers to its men’s jackets. The aim is not a transient fashion effect, but a lasting form of elegance designed to work across seasons.
Menswear from Brunello Cucinelli follows a total-look concept. This means the collections offer everything needed to assemble a complete, stylish outfit. Alongside jackets, blazers, knitwear, shirts, T-shirts, trousers, and jeans, the selection also includes classic tailoring. In summer, a linen shirt or polo shirt, as well as shorts from Brunello Cucinelli, are the appropriate pieces. The look is completed with Brunello Cucinelli accessories for men such as a belt and a Japanese-made, handcrafted pair of sunglasses from the Italian house. Brunello Cucinelli also offers footwear for men: sneakers, loafers, sandals, and boots. Depending on the season and personal preference, this ensures suitable shoes for every occasion. For those who prefer a more sporty aesthetic, the brand’s exclusive men’s sneakers are the right choice – ranging from styles that can be worn with a suit to technical designs for sport and leisure. The footwear can be complemented with sweatwear and drawstring trousers. For those who favour a more refined approach, spacious leather weekender bags serve as ideal companions, whether for workouts or travel. In winter, cashmere scarves and beanies from Brunello Cucinelli provide comfortable warmth. In this way, Cucinelli anticipated the principle of the men’s capsule wardrobe early on. It represents a counter-movement to the fast pace of the fashion industry, turning each individual piece into a long-term investment in the wardrobe, designed to be enjoyed for many years.
Fit note: In keeping with Italian tailoring tradition, menswear from Brunello Cucinelli is often based on a classic slim-fit silhouette. More relaxed cuts in Brunello Cucinelli men’s trousers can usually already be identified by their model name, for example through additions such as “Leisure Fit”. Shirts with a more relaxed fit also deliberately depart from the slim Italian line and are marked on the inside at the upper back with indications such as “Easy Fit”.
