Paul Smith men’s fashion: "Classic with a twist"
The famous stripes that have become Paul Smith’s trademark have 14 colours and actually came about by chance: In the 1990s there was supposed to be a collection with 28 colours, but it was too expensive to produce. So it become 14 – and the pattern was so popular that it became a firm fixture and signature pattern of all Paul Smith collections.
Who is Paul Smith?
His career has also taken many detours: His original aim was to become a racing cyclist, but an accident at the age of 17 ended his career before it had begun. He then worked in a tailor’s shop on the legendary Savile Row until 1967 when he met his wife Pauline Denyer who introduced him to the art of fashion design. What began in a small men’s fashion boutique in Nottingham became the best known British and internationally celebrated fashion label of Sir Paul Smith, who was knighted in 2000.
"Classic with a twist" is how Paul Smith himself describes his collections, summing up the style of his colourful designs. Along with fashion for men and women, he also designs accessories and soft furnishings and, in collaboration with Mini Cooper and Porche, even cars. He takes his inspiration from art, an impressive collection of everyday objects and observations and, as always, from his love of cycling.
