Where does the name Barena Venezia come from?

The name Barena Venezia comes from a ‘barena’: a natural marshland in the Venice Lagoon that is regularly flooded by the tides and is not clearly classified as either urban or rural. The brand describes the location on its website as follows: "An enchanted and wild oasis, indomitable and unchanged over the centuries. Mystical, deserted place, now submerged, now silent, of water and bushes in which naturally the essential of oneself is found."

The brand’s values and aesthetic have their roots in this very landscape. The decades-long tradition of local craftsmanship has also shaped the brand. At the same time, it feels a strong connection to the cultural and stylistic history of Venice – a city that has stood for elegance, creativity and first-class craftsmanship for centuries. Incidentally, this connection can also be seen in the label’s logo. It features the silhouette of a standing rower propelling a traditional boat with a standing oar. 

When was Barena Venezia established as a brand?

Sandro Zara founded Barena Venezia in 1993 and, together with Head of Design Massimo Pigozzo, developed the first menswear collection. From then on, the range grew steadily. In her role as the new Creative Director of the womenswear line, Francesca Zara, Sandro Zara’s daughter, expanded the Barena Venezia range to include womenswear collections from 2008 onwards. Year after year, she works with Massimo Pigozzo to develop the collections, guided by the principle that the material is the most important element. Once they have selected the finest fabrics, they begin designing the individual garments, such as the Barena Venezia jumper. Patterns from the early 20th century often serve as inspiration for this.

The company has now become a true family business, as all three siblings work there:

•    Francesca Zara is Chief Creative Officer, which means she is the head designer and creative director for womenswear, as well as being responsible for the brand’s external image.
•    Giovanni Zara is the Chief Operating Officer; in other words, he heads up the e-commerce division and is responsible for strategic business matters. 
•    Davide Sambin Zara is Chief Commercial Officer and oversees business development, sales and marketing. 
•    Massimo Pigozzo remains Head of Design for menswear and is responsible for the design of the fabrics.

Many of these workshops have been working with us for more than 20 years."
