Raised in Hamburg, Sander completed her textile engineering studies in Krefeld and spent her early years working as an editor for various fashion magazines. She founded her eponymous fashion label in 1968 and created masculine fashion for women. She quickly became one of the most important fashion designers of the 80s and 90s. With her onion look, Jil was a hit in the early 1980s. At the end of the 1990s, she designed her first collection for men. Her clean style and her flair for high-quality materials and excellent workmanship have made Sander an international icon. The brand stands for quality, sustainability and timeless elegance and has become one of the most important luxury brands worldwide over the years.

Today, Jil Sander is led by a creative duo appointed in 2020. Luke and Lucie Meier have taken responsibility for the development and implementation of the design concepts and collections and continue the minimalist style of Jil Sander. Together they are leading the label into a new era while preserving its values and traditions. Before the two, Raf Simons, among others, was creative director at Jil Sander before moving to Dior in 2012. As head designer, Jil returned to her brand a few times, but then stepped down completely after standing in for designer Raf Simons.
