What does Jacquemus mean?

Simon Porte Jacquemus founded the brand in 2009, choosing his mother’s maiden name as its name – a tribute to her. He draws inspiration for his designs from his mother’s legacy; she serves as a role model for his collections. At just 19 years of age, Jacquemus brought his own visions to life and, on a shoestring budget, promptly began selling garments he had designed himself on a website: the brand went viral overnight. It soon became clear that he wasn’t following any particular trends, but was creating something new in his own unique way.

Behind Jacquemus are the designer Simon Porte Jacquemus and over 300 staff members, who are based in Paris’s 8th arrondissement and delight people all over the world with their creations. In an interview with The Business of Fashion Podcast: Jacquemus: A Coming of Age Story (published on 22 November 2024), he says: "I was like: 'Let's do something that everyone can understand, like the postman, my grandmother, but also having references that are more like a niche thing.' But people need to enter my world. So I was imagining just a collection with a French name and a big smile. I think it was important to be so positive, and to be the person I am as well."
