The Seafarer brand for men was founded in 1896 by Antonio Anzalone in Brooklyn, New York. An Italian immigrant, Anzalone arrived in the USA and built his career in the clothing industry. Having worked for the US Navy, he had a deep understanding of the demands of workwear. His time in the Navy provided him with the knowledge and practical experience needed to design functional and durable clothing for the civilian market. His iconic legacy: the classic blue jeans.
The Seafarer brand for men became a symbol of durable workwear that was both stylish and comfortable. The early products were inspired by military workwear, particularly the uniforms worn by soldiers and sailors of the US Navy. Anzalone focused on using long-lasting materials like cotton denim and craftsmanship that could withstand extreme conditions. Up until 2010, Seafarer was the trouser supplier for the Navy. The workwear design made it easy to roll up the trouser legs, a key feature behind the wide flared legs that later gained aesthetic importance in fashion.
What made Seafarer for men truly stand out was the combination of functionality and design. At a time when workwear was mainly functional and rarely fashionable, Tony Anzalone cleverly blended both in his designer jeans for men. The brand quickly gained popularity not only among workers and sailors but also among fashion-conscious individuals who appreciated the rugged, stylish look.
Seafarer jeans were also worn by famous personalities like Jane Birkin, Serge Gainsbourg, and Brigitte Bardot, who discovered the brand in trendy second-hand stores and army surplus shops during the 1960s and 1970s. These vintage pieces quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Jane Birkin, known for her timeless style, and Serge Gainsbourg, with his rebellious aura, often wore exclusive designs from the brand, adding a touch of chic and coolness to their looks. Brigitte Bardot, with her famous "Bardot chic," also chose Seafarer’s durable jeans while shopping. The iconic flared trousers with large patch front pockets, in particular, gained a sexy image thanks to their wearers. This cultural connection gave Seafarer for men a unique significance, helping establish the brand today as a symbol of laid-back yet elegant fashion for both men and women, once worn by style icons.
In 2019, the Academy Srl was established, partly through Manuela Mariotti, the former co-founder of Dondup for men. This collective focuses on the Italian fashion and lifestyle market, promoting young artists, designers, and talents. The first project was the revival of Seafarer. Under Mariotti’s leadership as Creative Director, the brand returned as a modern high-end label. The first collection was aimed exclusively at women, followed shortly after by Seafarer for men. The brand now captures its original spirit season after season, adapting it to the present day.
Alongside the clear focus on denim – crafted into jackets with large pockets, shirts, and trousers – the brand’s maritime roots are reflected in numerous thoughtful details.
Seafarer for men incorporates these design elements into T-shirts, trousers, and other garments. Classic pieces like the duffle coat or a caban-style jacket, with their signature wide lapels and double-breasted buttons, perfectly capture the brand's nautical DNA.
