Tradition, quality and modernity are the values that the brand Tod's embodies as an Italian shoe label. Everything started in the beginning of the 20th century with a small shoe factory that was initially taken over and grown by the son of the founder Filippo della Valle, and ultimately transformed into an internationally successful industry by his nephew Diego. Now Diego della Valle leads the company that lies near the Adriatic coast in its third generation, and he gave it the simple short name J.P. Tod's, which over the course of the years became known simply as Tod's, and that remains to this day. The label’s classic and the start of the success story: An elegant moccasin made of the finest leather with a nubbed sole. The design of these casual and elegant slippers is inspired by the original automobile racing shoe model developed by Car Shoe in the 1960s. Owning to della Valle’s clever marketing strategy, Tod's moccasins became an instant success and sold much better than the starting model by Car Shoe. For this, Diego della Valle chose a method that still works today: He gave the moccasins to celebrities for free, which put them in the spotlight and got the brand noticed and well-known around the world. The assortment of Tod's designer fashion grew to include lace-up shoes, sneakers and bags, sunglasses, leather accessories, as well as small clothing collections mainly featuring leather jackets. As soon as Lady Diana was spotted in the 1980s with a handbag by the Italian label there was no stopping the success. To this day the company has grown into a luxury goods group, Tod's S.p.A., which consists among others of the brands Hogan and Fay, as well as the eponymous designer label.
Shoes made by Tod's go through an extensive production process during which craftsmen and experts who protect the long-standing tradition of the label hand-cut and finish the high-quality leather in approximately 100 steps. This makes every pair of shoes one of a kind. The moccasin bestsellers naturally got their model name "Gommino" because of the 133 rubber nubs on the soles of the shoes. In a wide range of colours and materials, they have become the centrepiece of the Tod's collections. Tod's has made other classic leather shoes icons of modern life: Tod's men’s sneakers, desert boots and penny loafers combine exclusivity with everyday wearability and can be styled with a suit as well as with a T-shirt and chinos.
